“The weather outside is frightful.” However, this did not deter our MLRT Sisterhood from their mission of tikkum olam, educational programming and community building while having fun.
The Holiday Expo, a partnership between and Sisterhood and Religious School, was a great success thanks to all the hard work of everyone at Main Line Reform Temple. It was truly a Temple-wide community event.
Also, in December, Sisterhood sponsored a Christmas Dinner at Calvary Baptist Church. Last year, in a series of articles entitled “Witness to Hunger” the Philadelphia Inquirer identified our neighbors as one of the poorest and hungriest districts in the nation. As a result, Sisterhood adopted a food shelter about ten minutes away from MLRT on Haverford Avenue in Philadelphia. Last year we sponsored both their Christmas and Easter dinners. It is a very meaningful way to start the holiday season and to make a difference in the lives of people in our community.
On January 9, Sisterhood discussed the book, The Dovekeepers, at our Annual Book Review. We had a lively discussion led by our librarian, Sally Brown, and enjoyed a delicious brunch provided by Sisterhood members.
On January 15, Sisterhood sponsored another meal. This time, we provided a pizza dinner for the teens that attended WINSTY. WINSTY is the annual social action weekend for teens from the region’s Reform congregations.
On January 16, Sisterhood participated in the Temple-wide MLK Day of Service. Sisterhood organized a collection of school supplies and also held a letter writing campaign to send letters to our service men and women in the US military to show our appreciation for their service.
Mark your calendars for Sisterhood’s Annual Bingo Game at 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 23. This event is always fun and features great prizes and food.
As our thoughts turn toward spring, you will find information about our Annual Shalach Manot Project in this issue of the Bulletin. Each year, Sisterhood organizes this project so that Temple Members can send a gift of hamantaschen, grape juice and sweet treats for Purim.
Finally, it is not too early to begin planning for programming for the 2012-2013 year. If you have any suggestions, please e-mail our Vice Presidents of Programming, Lori Levin and Beth Berkowitz at mlrtsisisprog@gmail.com.
The weather outside may be frightful but, the warmth of our Sisterhood community is evident in all of our activities and events.
