Purim 2025

This year's Purim festivities fill up the entire weekend! Circle March 14-16 on your calendar and plan to party with us!

With celebrations including costumes, skits and songs, noisemakers, and gifts of food, Purim is definitely full of fun!
The main communal celebration involves a public reading—usually in the synagogue—of the Book of Esther (Megillat Esther), which tells the story of the holiday: Under the rule of King Ahashverosh, Haman, the king’s adviser, plots to exterminate all of the Jews of Persia. His plan is foiled by Queen Esther and her cousin, Mordechai, who ultimately save the Jews of Persia from destruction. The significance of Purim lies not so much in how it began, but in what it has become: a thankful and joyous affirmation of Jewish survival.

Dinner and a Show!

MLRT’s celebration of the chag kicks off with dinner and a show on Friday night, March 14. Come to the Temple at 5:30 pm to fulfill one of the mitzvot of Purim: eating a seudah (festive meal). We are offering ziti, pizza, and salad at our Purim Seudah for $10 a person (children 3 and under are free) and we want to save you a seat at our table!
Registration is required for dinner before March 10.

Once your belly is full, get ready to laugh until it aches! We are so excited to announce the first MLRT’s Got Talent Show, Shpiel, and Services at 6:30 pm. Part Shabbat Service, part performances from some of MLRT’s biggest stars, and part Megillah reading – it will be pure fun!
There is no cost to attend this Service, Shpiel, and Megillah Reading so bring your friends to see if someone earns the Golden Grogger!

Please contact Rabbi Newburge at gnewburge@mlrt.org with any questions. Want to show off your vocal chords and read the Megillah to the congregation? Email Cantor Rudnick at frudnick@mlrt.org to volunteer for a section.

KLM Variety Showcase

Lower Merion has talent to spare! Our local clergy will come together for KLM’s Talent Variety Showcase on Saturday night, March 15 at 8:15 pm. This exciting display of prowess is beyond description (trust us) and is not to be missed! Click here to RSVP

Take a seat at the Temple for free and enjoy as our rabbis and cantors offer everything from arias to stand up comedy, Bob Dylan impersonations to balloon animals. This isn’t just for laughs –  100% of the night’s donations will support Kibbutz Alumim, located less than 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the Gaza border.  Field crops, orchards, greenhouses, and livestock farming provide Alumim’s primary income, but burned-out chicken coops, vandalized hothouses, and charred piles of irrigation equipment are what remains after Hamas’s murderous onslaught on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Our financial contribution to Kibbutz Alumim will help restore their agricultural livelihood.
